From the first day I was introduced to the Providence Associates, I was deeply moved by their dedication and spirit of service. The Providence Associates are a group of lay people who continue the tradition and mission of the Sisters of Providence, living out the charism of compassion and care that has long guided the work of Father Lacombe Care Society.
Those who wish to become Associates begin with a period of formation guided by Sister Magdalena. This includes an orientation program lasting from six months to a year, with courses on the life and spirit of Blessed Émilie Tavernier-Gamelin, Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart, and Madre Bernarda Morin, as well as the history, charism, and mission of the Sisters of Providence in Western Canada.
The first group of eight Providence Associates in Western Canada met in September 1983, and on November 11, 1984, they were formally received as Providence Associates. Since then, the group has continued to grow, grounded in prayer and a shared commitment to service. Their dedication is a living reflection of Providence values—humility, compassion, and love for those most in need.
Today, the Providence Associates serve our community in many meaningful ways. In addition to providing chapel support at our care Centre’s four times a week, they have also taken an active role in our fundraising efforts to help advance the new Father Lacombe redevelopment project. They have done this my making ornate candles and flower arrangements and the sale of the proceeds are directed to the foundation. We are deeply grateful for the Providence Associates, their prayers and their partnership. They embody the legacy of the Sisters of Providence and continue to inspire all of us at Father Lacombe Care Foundation to serve with kindness, dignity, and hope.
