Imagine this: over 350 Canadians develop dementia every single day—that’s more than 15 people every hour. This startling statistic comes from the Alzheimer Society of Canada’s report, The Many Faces of Dementia in Canada. This comprehensive study aims to shed light on the future of dementia in our country over the next 30 years.
While advancing age is the strongest known risk factor for dementia, it’s important to remember that dementia is not an inevitable part of aging. Most individuals diagnosed with dementia are over 65, with the risk doubling approximately every five years after this age. By the time they reach 85, nearly one in four people will have been diagnosed with dementia.
Dementia affects memory, thinking, and behavior, often leading to a decline in the ability to perform everyday activities. However, it does not diminish the human spirit found in our residents. At the Father Lacombe and Providence Care Centre, we see firsthand that people with dementia can still experience profound joy, laughter, and life. We witness them dancing, laughing, singing, painting, and truly enjoying each moment.
In an art class, one of our Recreational Therapists observed, “Something as simple as coloring can be calming. It gives the brain space for peace and quiet—a huge therapeutic impact for those who are anxious or confused.”
